Mr. Yoong graduated from University of Malaya in 1982. He did his housemanship at University Hospital, Kuala Lumpur, and then worked as a Medical Officer at various hospitals in Malaysia. He passed his Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, UK (FRCS Glasg.) in 1989. He was a Registrar in Neurosurgery in the Department of Neurosurgery, Kuala Lumpur General Hospital, and then subsequently in Dublin, EIRE; Glasgow, Scotland, UK. While in Glasgow, he was trained under the internationally renowned Spinal Neurosurgeon – Mr. Robin Johnston of the Glasgow Neurological Institute. He also underwent the full Australian Neurosurgical Training Programme in Adelaide and Sydney, Australia, and did a year’s elective rotation in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK, training under the world famous Cerebro-Vascular Surgeon, Mr. Robin Sengupta. He passed the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in Neurosurgery (FRACS Neurosurgery) by examination in 1995. He was gazetted as a Specialist in Neurosurgery by the Malaysian Government in 1991.
Mr. Yoong returned to Kuala Lumpur General Hospital as a Consultant in Neurosurgery in 1994. He was then posted to Penang General Hospital where he started the Department of Neurosurgery from scratch. The unit serviced the entire northern region from upper Perak to Perlis.
Mr. Yoong is registered as a Neurosurgeon with the National Specialist Register (NSR) of Malaysia. He is a Member of the Academy of Medicine, Malaysia since 2005. He is a current member of AO Spine, which is an International Spine Surgery Society. He is a past President of the Neurosurgical Association of Malaysia as well as a former member of the Specialist Subcommittee for Neurosurgery of the NSR.
