Prof John Tharakan graduated his basic medical degree from University of Kerala India with FIRST RANK and GOLD MEDAL in the year 1974 . He completed his Master’s Degree in Internal Medicine also from the same university in the year 1978 and went on to do his Neurology training at All India Institute of Medical Sciences New Delhi- India’s premier National Medical Institute . He was awarded Doctor of Medicine – Neurology in 1981.
Prof John’s professional career started as a Lecturer in Neurology at the then newly started Sri Chitra Tirunal Institute – Trivandrum and he played a key role in developing this new institution into an Internationally renowned Institute for Neurosciences. He was awarded the prestigious COMMONWEALTH MEDICAL FELLOWSHIP IN 1987 and had further training in Neuroimmunology at world famous Guy’s Hospital London. He was elected as a FELLOW of American Academy of Neurology in 1998 and a Fellow of Royal College of Physicians of Ireland in 2002. In the year 2009 he was enrolled in the National Specialist Registry -Malaysia as a NEUROLOGIST. He was awarded the “ANUGERAH PERKIDMATAN CEMERLANG” by USM in the year 2004
Prof Dr John Tharakan spend his entire professional career spanning 40 years at various academic institutions- 14 years at Sri Chitra Tirunal Institute India, 11 years at Sultan Qaboos University Oman and the last 15 years at University Sains Malaysia. He has extensive experience in critical care neurology, stroke, movement disorders, epilepsy, neuromuscular disorders, and various neurodegenerative disorders. He is also highly experienced in clinical neurophysiological procedures like EEG,EMG and Nerve conduction studies. He was instrumental in establishing Epilepsy surgery and Deep Brain Stimulation procedures at USM Kelantan.
