Prof. Dr. Amir S Khir received his medical education at Edinburgh University and graduated with MBChB in 1973, followed by training in Internal Medicine in Edinburgh, Sheffield and Aberdeen, UK. He obtained his MRCP (UK) in 1977 and was elected fellow of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of Edinburgh (1990) as well as in Ireland (FRCPI) in 2004. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Medicine at National University of Ireland in 2016.
Prof. Dr. Amir began a career in academic medicine in 1978 as lecturer at the University of Aberdeen, and subsequently joined University of Malaya (UM) as Associate Professor in 1986. At UM, he became Professor and later Deputy Dean before leaving to become the Foundation Professor of Medicine at Penang Medical College (PMC), where he was elected Dean in 2004 as well as President and Dean from 2013-2016. He now holds a fractional appointment as Professor of Medicine at PMC.
Prof. Dr. Amir received training in Endocrinology and Diabetes at Aberdeen Teaching Hospitals and became Consultant Endocrinologist at University Hospital Kuala Lumpur. Since 1999, he was Honorary Consultant Endocrinologist at Penang Hospital where he started the endocrine service. He is a trainer and examiner for the Ministry of Health Endocrine Fellowship Program. He also sits on the National Specialist Register Committee for Endocrinology.
