Gastritis

Gastritis occurs when there is inflammation within the stomach lining that causes pain and discomfort. This may worsen combined with severe attacks that can last for days. Additionally, this can come with long-term nausea and loss of appetite. Gastritis can give more severe complications if it goes untreated.

Causes

There are many probable causes for Gastritis that includes:

- After surgery, burns or traumatic injury

- Excessive alcohol consumption

- Infection causes by Helicobacter Pylori (H. Pylori), a bacteria that is found in the lining of the stomach that can weaken protective coating resulting in the digestive juices that reaches the stomach lining

- Long-term use of non-steroidical anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) such as aspirin and ibuprofen

- Stress and chronic vomiting (observed in bulimia cases)

Symptoms

Gastric might not produce any signs or symptoms in most cases but the most common ones include:

- Black stool due to the blood in the bowel actions

- Blood in your vomit

- Burning feeling in the upper abdomen

- Hiccoughs

- Loss of appetite

- Nausea and indigestion

- Pain in the upper abdomen

- Vomiting

- Weight Loss


Treatment

Depending on the cause and severity of your condition, the treatment option might vary. Your doctor will examine and recommend the best treatment for you. These might include:

- Acid control medications to neutralise acid levels in the stomach

- Antibiotics to kill the backteria if you are infected with H. Pylori

- Painkillers such as those containing Acetaminophen

- Dehydration

- Kidney problems

- Stomach cancer

- Stomach ulcers and scarring
