Lose The Glasses Campaign

Description

#LoseTheGlasses campaign, a collaboration between Gleneagles Kota Kinabalu Hospital and MERCY Malaysia Sabah Chapter has managed to collect more than 100 pairs of glasses, with 84 reusable pairs, since its launch in February 2018. The glasses were assessed for its power attrition and were tagged accordingly by Optometrist Loh Kee Wen from Gleneagles Kota Kinabalu’s Eye Centre. They will be distributed to the underprivileged in villages in rural Sabah during MERCY Malaysia’s medical camps.

For the poor, eyeglasses often are either inaccessible or unaffordable, forcing hundreds of millions of people to live below their full potential. The World Health Organization reports that approximately 517 million people in developing countries are visually impaired because they do not have access to corrective treatment.

"The glasses collected from #LoseTheGlasses campaign will bring great value to the villagers we meet at remote areas. As we age, most people will have vision problems. Reading glasses will be really useful for reading text messages, official letters and other important activities, even for safety reasons such as reading their medical prescriptions," says Dr Anbarasu Ramalingam, Chairperson of MERCY Malaysia Sabah Chapter.

The #LoseTheGlasses campaign is a pioneer effort with MERCY Malaysia Sabah Chapter as part of Gleneagles Kota Kinabalu Hospital’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. This is an ongoing initiative as the hospital will continue to collect unused glasses to be distributed by MERCY Malaysia Sabah Chapter. “Gleneagles Hospital is certainly proud to sustain our efforts in this worthy cause. It is one of the many CSR activities we readily support to help and serve the Sabah community ” said Noel Cheah, Chief Executive Officer of Gleneagles Kota Kinabalu Hospital.
